Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
For some women - whether due to the effects of gravity over time, loss of skin elasticity with age, pregnancy or breast feeding, or weight loss - their breasts may lose their prior youthful appearance. Sagging of the breast associated with nipples and areolas that point downward, especially when located below the breast crease, is a condition called ptosis.
For women who are satisfied with the current volume or size of breast tissue, but desire to improve the shape, a breast lift or mastopexy may be right. A mastopexy is a procedure designed to reshape the breasts into a more youthful contour and reposition the nipples and areolas on the breasts.
Dr. Mitchell employs the latest techniques to help reshape the breast and restore an aesthetically pleasing contour to the breasts. With all procedures, Dr. Mitchell is cognizant of the scars created to achieve the proper shape. In all patients, there will be a scar the surrounds the new nipple and areola position. Generally, most patients, unless an implant is added to increase the breast volume, require an additional scar that runs from the bottom of the areola down to the fold of skin below the breasts. Dr. Mitchell also may place a scar along the fold of skin beneath the breast if it is necessary to achieve the proper shape.
A mastopexy or breast lift is performed as an outpatient procedure. Surgical drains are rarely placed. All sutures are placed internally. Mild bruising and swelling may occur. This will typically resolve over the course of a month. Initially following the surgery, the breasts may appear to be high on the chest wall. This is normal and expected. The breasts gradually descend over the course of the first month to the final position. Recovery is excellent, with most women returning to their normal activities inf a week or two.
